The Blood Donation Centre (BDC) is the central blood bank of DOHMS. It is the provider of all blood and blood products to the three main hospitals in the department (Rashid Hospital, Dubai Hospital and Al Wasl Hospital). BDC also organizes blood donation programs around the Emirate, and also supplies blood products to the private hospitals in Dubai whenever necessary.
The centre collects Blood donation from regular or casual donors, as well as from blood donation events organized outside factories, schools, hotels etc. However, the demand for blood is steadily rising, with a majority going to thalassemia patients at Al Wasl Hospital.
All blood donations are tested extensively for blood group serology and microbiology virology. To this end, a continuously updated virology-screening program is carried out according to the latest international standards, and the centre is now home to a PCR laboratory. BDC also provides virology serology services for patients, including HIV, HCV, rubella and hepatitis viruses.
