The Pathology and Laboratory Service at Rashid Hospital is a comprehensive department that delivers subspecialty clinical care. Our mission is to deliver reliable, timely diagnostic services and to achieve excellence with commitment to quality, safety and professionalism in accordance with international standards.
The laboratory is a completely sub-specialized full service which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The laboratory has the latest equipment and technologies and is run by our professional team who performs over two million tests annually.
Our services include hematology, blood transfusion services, biochemistry, microbiology and a TB diagnostic unit. Tests that are not carried out in the laboratory are sent to other DHA laboratories and to our referral laboratory in Germany: Bioscientia. The laboratory is headed by Dr. Rania Medhat Seliem, an American board-certified pathologist and hematopathologist.
- Hematology Unit and Transfusion Services:
The Hematology unit offers full services including routine and special hematology.
Tests include automated hematology, routine and special coagulation, reticulocyte counts, pathological analysis of body fluids, peripheral smears, bone marrow aspirate and trephine assessment.
Peripheral blood smears and bone marrow aspirates are examined, and if need be, referred for further tests such as flow cytometry and cytogenic and molecular studies.
The transfusion service in Rashid Hospital provides testing for blood types and compatibility as well as consultative services to all clinicians regarding transfusion related issues.
The unit receives donated blood that has been fully tested in the Dubai Blood Donation Center (BDC). The service utilizes 100% blood components for inpatients and A/E patients.
The service was awarded the Dubai Quality Award for the best practice in Optimum Blood Utilization.
The Clinical Biochemistry Unit offers full services which include: routine chemistry, therapeutic and abused drugs monitoring and the detection of trace elements. It employs modern automated, computerized instrumentation for all tests. The Biochemistry Unit receives a variety of samples like CSF, urine and other body fluids. The unit also provides a centralized service for sending samples to our referral laboratory in Germany, Bioscientia, for tests which are not available in DHA.
The Microbiology unit offers a full service which includes bacteriology, serology, virology as well as urine and stool examination.
It also provides a centralized mycology service for all DHA hospitals and clinics.
The unit plays an important role in the infection control process of the hospital by providing data of positive patients’ cultures in addition to environmental screening.
The unit also participates actively in the antibiotic control program and publishes an annual antibiogram that shows the trend of antibiotic resistance in the hospital.
The TB unit in Rashid Hospital offers centralized mycobacteria and legionella laboratory services for all DHA hospitals and clinics as well as the police clinic. These services include: microscopy, cultures, identification and antibiotic susceptibility for mycobacteria, T.Spot-TB test for diagnosis of active and latent tuberculosis and detection of legionella in patients and water samples.
- Supportive Services Unit:
The unit offers round-the-clock phlebotomy services for inpatients.
For outpatients, services are provided from 7 am till 11:00 pm on a daily basis in the outpatient department (OPD). The unit also includes a central receiving area (CRA) for the receipt of samples from both inpatients and outpatients.
All samples are received and traced electronically.
The received samples are distributed to the concerned units by well-trained messengers.
- Trauma Center Laboratory unit:
RH Trauma Center is the only Accident Emergency (A/E) center in the area.
The Trauma Center unit was created to provide STAT results (less than 30 minutes) for the patients attending A/E.
Tests that are not done in the trauma lab are sent to Rashid Hospital’s main laboratory through a built-in pneumatic tube.
The unit offers STAT tests for hematology, biochemistry, blood bank.
- Safety in Rashid Hospital Laboratory:
The Laboratory Safety Unit is responsible for enforcing health and safety regulations by continuous and regular staff training. It conducts regular inspections and risk assessments for all the laboratory units.
The safety team ensures that all personnel protective equipment and available safety tools are properly used by all staff
